Questions to ask Lead and/or Manager at first meeting after being hired: 
  • How will I normally receive my assignments?  Who can assign tasks and projects to me?  How will I know what the deadlines are?
  • How would you like me to get clarification if I don't understand the parameters of an assignment?
  • How do you want me to respond if someone other than my lead or manager assigns a task to me?
  • If I have a technical question that needs to be answered by someone who knows our systems, do I come to you with it?  And if so, I know that you are busy with other things too, but when is it acceptable to interrupt you?  If not, how do you recommend that I get the answers?
  • If I need to be out of the office and I know the day and time in advance, how should I request the time off?  After I obtain permission, who else do I notify and how (email, calendar)?
  • If I am stuck out of the office during normal work hours at an unplanned time, what notification procedures should I follow?  Text, email, phone?  Do I need to contact members of my team?  Is there a contact list?
  • How would you like me to report my assignment progress?  Email, status reports, updating tickets?   Can you point me to a sample or guidelines for format and the correct amount of detail?
  • How would you like me to communicate when I have issues that are blocking my progress?
  • What is the best way for me to find out from you if I am meeting your expectations?
  • How can I find out if there is something that I have done that you don't want me to do?
  • Does our workplace have any formal performance review process?  What and when?
